This week we were tasked with replicating some icons, I decided it would probably be most useful to try and replicate some icons from existing music apps. In order to know which ones to look at, I started with some competitor analysis. The most popular streaming apps are currently spotify, Apple Music, YouTube music. These apps prioritise listening, playlists, and algorithm recommendations but they offer a very limited depth when it comes to actually understanding the music. For example if you wanted to learn about an artist or the background of a song you would often be required to leave the app and look elsewhere. Through this comparison, I noticed a lack of features which support learning, storytelling and deeper engagement with music. These apps focus is largely on consumption rather than context, meaning the user experience is efficient but somewhat surface level. In contrast, indirect competitors such as Genius do provide song meanings, lyric annotations and background information which aligns closer with the learning aspect I'm interested in. However, these platforms exist separately from streaming services and are not fully integrated into the listening experience. I see this as an opportunity to create a more cohesive and all in one place app that combines streaming with storytelling, timelines and contextual learning allowing users to listen and understand it.
