This week has been one of my favourite lectures so far. we learned about icon sets, to prepare us for creating our own for the music player app. icons are something we take so for granted and barely even notice, but if they dissapeared, suddenly everyone would be very aware of them. we looked at how theyve developed through history, and started thinking of some of our own ideas..

Icon(ic) Designers

Style and Size

a topic we kept revisitng was how important it is to ensure your icons are the same style and size, eg if one if flat they all must be flat, or glyph etc. on week 1 i had made some icon ideas, and i sortve hated them but wasnt sure what else to do. this week, i revisited them and made them all the same size and style. This improvement doesnt even require analysis they speak for themselves..

after

They are far from perfect, but by making sure they are all the same style/size in a set, i think they already look a lot better.

Continuity in Icon Design

we looked at Netflix, and how the logo is curved at the bottom, in reference to cinema screens. What blew my mind was how this is a persistent theme in the app, with all the buttons having a curve to some degree. i decided to look for contnuity of this sort in other apps, the first place i spotted it was spotify. all of their icons have no sharp edges, everything is rounded off. this is something never would’ve noticed, but will now keep an eye out for in every interface i see…

i was pretty happy with the result, and this was really useful for getting me practicing creating icons. The font is different, but aside from that id say i did ok with the atual icons.
