Postmodernism was a movement which began on the 15th of july, 1972. Previously, design was only about function, postmodernism was about expression and symbolism. It challenged the order and clarity of modernism, whilst fitting the changing social views of the time. It was most prevelent in the 60s,70s and early 80s.
Postmodernism rejected the traditional design style by mixing disparate historical styles, pop culture, and modern art. Key features include vibrant and unexpected colours, a mix of geometric and organic shapes, furniture with bold curves or unusual forms, and the use of irony or humour.

Above is April Griemans work, she was one of the first people to incorporate computer design into her work. This was a foreign concept at the time, designers initially rejected the idea but April could see the potential, designing these covers for the magazine WET. Her use of bold eccentric colours and layering was new for the magazine industry, it had previously prioritised modernist designs and typography. I especially like the inclusion of random objects that really shouldnt fit in, but add to the absurdity and fit the postmodern aesthetic excellently.
Weingart was born in Germany in 1941, and studied swiss graphic design. He definitely influenced the transition from modernist to post modernist design.
Weingart inspired the New wave typography which emerged during the 70s. He explored when typography becomes/ is considered a new form, eg when it’s cut up, layered etc. Weingart deconstructed his original pieces by cutting them up, sticking them back together, overlapping and layering them. This created chaotic, dynamic compositions that looked spontaneous but were very intentional. He experimented with varying fonts, their sizes/orientation and weights. He viewed letters as visual elements, closer to a form than merely a catalyst for information.
