Today was quite a short lesson, but a very useful one. We met Ben, a graduate designer who showed us some design tips. The focus of the class was learning how to use the blend feature.

Blend feature

We created a quick A4 poster to introduce ourselves. We then used these to experiment using the blend feature, which allows you to select different colour palettes for a pre existing frame. since my original poster was monochromatic, i decided to change it to colours and experiment with this.

I really like the blue and turquoise one, and never would’ve thought of this combination had i not used this feature

Home research

Kyle uploaded some useful resources for us to use after this class which really cemented the knowledge of what we learned in class and also allowed me to practice some of these Figma tricks.

freeCodeCamp beginner video

‘Auto-layout is making properties of your layout to be automatically adaptive’

its hard to show the process in Notion, but i basically trialled and copied what he did in the video. he experimented with adding text to a frame before and after using auto layout. i found this really useful as I didn’t realise you could simplify this process so much.

Unsplash Plugin

After playing around with this plugin for a bit i realised how useful it will be when making prototype/mock up screens. Instead of downloading images from the internet and uploading them manually, you can insert them straight into your Figma frames which will definitely save time in future. Also, all of the images are licensed so can be used freely.

Reflection

Overall, I found today's lesson useful for starting to design my designer bio app. Hearing advice from a graduate designer felt really valuable as it made th tools we are currently learning to use (like auto layout) feel more relevant to real design. Small features in Figma can have a big impact on speed and efficiency, and I hopeful continue to learn more from Ben in the following weeks.
