Brief/Concept
The brief for this project was to choose a designer, and communicate their work, philosophy and impact through a digital interface. i chose Josef Müller-Brockmann (JMB) due to his emphasis on clarity, structure and his use of grids, as these principles align with the same interface and interaction design principles still use everyday.
I began by researching the designers in the brief, so i could understand how their design styles differ and select one. Through this comparison, i identified that designers working within the Swiss style prioritise clarity over decoration. This led me to explore how these principles could be translated and applied within a digital interface.
brief overview of the designers
Right from our first lesson Muller-Brockmanns work stood out to me. I think the way he used form at the time was really unique, as he was one of the first designers to prioritise legibility over how ‘pretty’ a poster looked. His designs show how structure can help create work that remains equally as relevant even 70 years later. I chose the question ‘How did Josef Müller-Brockmann’s design philosophy challenge current design approaches, and how does this continue to influence modern design?”
